What Are Dermal Fillers?
Dermal fillers are known to be a nonsurgical cosmetic treatment that can be injected into the skin to restore volume and add fullness to the face. This treatment is popularly used to diminish facial lines and remove the appearance of wrinkles.
Why Are They Used?
Typically, this gel-like substance is injected underneath the skin to improve the appearance of sagging skin. Fillers can add fullness and smoothness to the skin as one begins to age. Oftentimes, an increase in age results in a reduction of collagen production resulting in saggy skin. In this case, dermal fillers are used to pump the skin back up.
Common uses of dermal fillers include:
- Volumized Lips
- Smooth Wrinkles
- Plump Cheeks
- Reduce Forehead Lines
- Reshape Nose or Chin
- Help Sagging Skin
- Make Face More Symmetrical
What Happens Before a Dermal Filler Treatment?
Before the injections begin, this process will start with a consultation from a healthcare provider. During this consultation, the patient will be asked about their medical history, the medications they are taking, if they have any allergies, etc. Skin conditions and a history of similar treatments will also be discussed.
After this portion of questions has been answered, a healthcare provider will then mark the face with a pen to indicate which treatment areas are to be worked on and what the desired result will be. Here, specific fillers will be recommended, before photos will be taken, and a discussion on recovery time and side effects will take place.
What Happens During a Dermal Filler Treatment?
At this time, a healthcare provider will then apply an anaesthetic in the form of cream or lotion in order to numb the treatment area before the injections are inserted. This will make the treatment more comfortable.
Next, a thin needle will be used to insert the filler under the skin in the desired areas. Most patients describe the feeling of the needle as a small sting or pinch. Depending on how many areas are going to be treated and the amount of filler to be injected, this process can last anywhere from a few minutes to an hour.
What Happens After a Dermal Filler Treatment?
Once all of the filler has been inserted, the healthcare provider will cleanse the treatment area and provide an ice pack to help with swelling and pain. Side effects like discomfort, bruising, or swelling are to be expected for a few days.
Most daily activities can be resumed after this treatment, but it is recommended to rest and recover for one to two days after the treatment and to avoid rigorous physical activity at this time.
