Everything You Need To Know About Ipl Treatment

IPL, which stands for intense pulsed light, is non-invasive light therapy. It works to produce a silkier texture on the skin while also evening the skin tone. In some cases, it can even reverse some sun damage. It is also beneficial in treating discolorations such as brown or red spots. To help you decide if this treatment is right for you, Ava Laser Clinic has put together this short guide on everything you should know about IPL treatments.

How Does IPL Therapy Work?

Intense pulsed light therapy targets the colors in your skin with light energy. The light will heat the skin and remove the unwanted cells. IPL treatments utilize a pulse of multiple wavelengths to treat the target area on the skin. The treatment results in younger-looking skin thanks to a more even tone with little to no downtime.

Who Should Use IPL Therapy?

Intense pulsed light therapy is effective for a comprehensive range of skin concerns. IPL is most effective on very pale skin all the way to light brown skin tones. It can be used to treat:

  • Ruptured blood vessels
  • Discolored skin
  • Acne
  • Fine wrinkles
  • Age spots
  • Dark spots
  • Spider veins
  • Birthmarks
  • Freckles
  • Redness from rosacea
  • And more!

While the procedure is non-invasive, it is not suitable for pregnant women, those with skin conditions, and people taking certain medications. It should also be avoided if you have light sensitivity, use retinoid creams, or use any form of tanning methods. It is also not very effective on very dark skin tones.

Is IPL Effective?

Like any cosmetic procedure, IPL’s effectiveness depends on the person and the condition they wish to treat. For those seeking to reduce redness, IPL will be effective in removing as much as 75% of the broken blood vessels under the skin. Patients who wish to treat sunspots can expect at least 70% of their marks to fade. IPL lasers are also used as an effective hair removal treatment if the treatment is performed on dark hair that is visible against lighter skin. Those with blond hair or darker skin may not see results with IPL hair removal treatments. Acne scars can also be visibly reduced with several sessions under an IPL laser.

Is IPL Therapy Safe?

When performed by a trained technician, like those here at Ava Laser Clinic, the procedure is safe and effective. There are few side effects to note. In rare cases, the treatment may result in swelling, or pain. Using the services of a professional will reduce the chances of a negative reaction to IPL therapy.

What Should You Expect During a Session?

Before your session, you should avoid tanning of any form for at least two weeks. Chemical peels, waxing, and collagen shots should also be avoided two to four weeks before your appointment. When you arrive for treatment, make sure your skin is clean and devoid of makeup, perfume, or other topical irritants. Aspirin or any other drug that may make you bleed more should also be avoided.

During the procedure, the technician will apply a clear gel directly to your skin. After covering your eyes with dark glasses, they will pass a handheld IPL device over the treatment area. Sessions can last anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour, depending on the size of the treatment area.

IPL is relatively painless, though some patients will notice minor discomfort. For sensitive patients, a numbing cream will be applied a 15 to 30 minutes before the session starts. Following the session, the treatment area will seem red and irritated, as if you had a sun burn, for six hours. In some patients, bruising can persist for as long as two days. It is critical to follow the after-treatment care guidelines provided after your session to experience the best possible results.
